"If you can meet with triumph and disaster...

...and treat these two imposters just the same..." as Kipling wrote, then you'll find a week in which your images bombed in the Photocraft PDI round on Wednesday and then got the thumbs up two days later, from one of the leading 'A' lister and commercial photographers in the US, an interesting contrast.

The club competition thing, the club leaderboard, as I've mentioned before is neither here nor there - the outcome is the same for me...I just enjoy sharing images.

The 'A' lister photographer is Patrick Ecclesine. I got whiplash from the double take I did when the iPhone notification came up with 'Patrick Ecclesine is following you on Instagram'. I've had a string of time wasters come up on the Insta follow thing lately; people who aren't motivated by imaging and they immediately wind up in the block list. It's therefore a little startling to have Patrick look at some of my Insta stuff and decide to tag my account to see more and that doesn't introduce a whole new world of pressure, when it comes to new content, does it, lol?

All jokes aside, it doesn't and Kipling had it right, so I'll just continue as I did before Wednesday or today and make images that please and speak to me. It's the only way to fly...

I am in complete agreement with you Steve. My photos also bombed on Wednesday, yet one of the entries is one of my favourite photographs and currently enjoys a place of prominence above the mantlepiece, where I can view it every day.........and smugly enjoy the favourable comments of friends and family.

Cheers for that Kevin - competitions are the bedrock of pretty much any club I've ever checked out. Whether they 'improve' your photography, depends on what you want from your imaging. If your motivation to create photographs is rooted in the competition ethos and you're happy to produce stuff that meets what judges routinely mark up, then I'm happy too.

I've certainly done it myself in the past and it's only in more recent times that I've really grasped that the photographic solar system is huge and that club competition is one small planet in among many others and that one thing it isn't, is the 'sun'.

The steer I've taken from photographers I admire, is to ask yourself 'why am I taking images?' and to recognise that your own unique photographic voice needs 360° freedom to move.

I'll always be happy to participate fully in club competition events (bar printing at the minute), while remaining detached from any outcomes. The 10+ image by the way, was my runaway favourite as soon as I saw it - a cracking shot.
