Week 5 of the club programme for the 2019 – 2020 season was our Open Print Competition No 1. Eight prints were received for the Standard Level completion and twenty-six prints for the Advanced Level. As always, members nominate themselves for the level of competition they enter for the season.
We welcomed back to the club our judge for the evening, Gerald Kitiyakara LRPS. He is a regular visitor to the club and a member of the neighbouring Carshalton Camera Club.
Gerald provided detailed comments on each of the submissions, providing input on both those elements of the picture that he was particularly taken with, and advice on those which he felt either did not contribute to the impact of the picture or indeed which he felt detracted from the overall arrangement.
Many words of advice or nudges were heard during the evening, intended to help members consider how they prepare their competition entries. The following comments were heard more than once:-
· What or where is the story? What is the subject?
· Lighting levels well controlled
· Pleasing capture, or caught well
· Colour balance across the picture; balance of warm and cool tones gives a good feeling
· Interesting take; or sometimes even “brave”.
For Standard Level our overall winner was ‘Sunset at Cadzand Beach’ by Chris R, shown below. Our judge commented on the red / blue tones giving a warm / cold atmosphere and an overall good feeling.
For Standard Level we had one additional Highly Commended entry, ‘Apocalypse Now!’ By Alan M, shown below. Our judge commented that this submission was either ‘trying it on’ or a refreshing change from the norms of camera club competitions.
For the Advanced Level our overall winner was ‘Elemental Patterns Yellowstone’ by Martin F, shown below. Our judge commented that the strength of this image was apparent from distance, due to the bold colours and patterns. Even the wisps of steam got a mention for centring the subject.
For Advanced Level we had three additional Highly Commended entries. These are ‘Magpie coming in to land’ by Mandy B, ‘Freshly caught perch’ also by Mandy B, and ‘Common Field Grasshopper’ by Dave S, all shown below.
